Former Sun Armen Gilliam, drafted second overall by Phoenix in 1987 draft, died Tuesday night after collapsing during a pickup basketball game at a local LA Fitness outside of Pittsburgh. Gilliam suffered what appeared to be a heart attack and then was pronounced dead at the hospital later on.

Talk in the last couple of days before the draft on Thursday had heated up on the Suns taking Iman Shumpert with the 13th pick overall. The Suns loved his athleticism, his ability to guard a number of different positions and saw him as a possible franchise point guard down the line.

Shumpert was available when the Suns were on the clock with their first and only pick on Thursday night, but Phoenix instead went with a big man and selected Markieff Morris out of Kansas. The Georgia Tech guard fell four spots later to the Knicks at 17. (more…)

In a move that hasn’t been very common in the last seven or eight years, the Suns finally kept onto a draft pick and chose Markieff Morris out of Kansas with the 13th overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft. His twin brother, Marcus, was drafted a pick later by Houston. (more…)

It’s the eve of the draft and the Phoenix Suns will be on the clock with the 13th pick if they do not find a way to move up. The Greg One has already gone on record as a member of the Jimmer Fredette fan club. However, with Utah one pick ahead of the Suns and the growing interest Fredette is getting from teams in the top ten, it looks like there is no way he will make it to the Valley if the Suns don’t move up.

So once and for all, after watching the draft boards, the televised coverage, the rumor mill and listening to Suns brass on the local airwaves, here is my prediction for the thirteenth pick. Drumroll please. (more…)
