Despite the status of the offseason in limbo because of a pending lockout, the Suns will still be holding a free agent minicamp this afternoon. The camp will feature Phoenix first round pick Markieff Morris as well as several free agent rookies and veterans who have been out of the league.

The undrafted rookies include forward Matt Howard, who was one of the leaders of a Butler squad that went to two straight National Championship games. Several were surprised that Howard wasn’t drafted late in the second round. Others include Ohio State guard/forward David Lighty, Washington power forward Matthew Bryan-Amaning, Colorado guard Cory Higgins and Tulsa guard Justin Hurtt. (more…)

Shumpert was available when the Suns were on the clock with their first and only pick on Thursday night, but Phoenix instead went with a big man and selected Markieff Morris out of Kansas. The Georgia Tech guard fell four spots later to the Knicks at 17. (more…)

Morris twins in NBA draft

The SunsĀ  accomplished their main goal of this offseason by grabbing a power forward with the 13th overall pick in last night’s draft. That man’s name? Markieff Morris.

Many so called draft experts called Markieff the lesser player compared to his brother Marcus, who was born seven minutes after Markieff and drafted about the same time frame after his brother. Marcus put up much better numbers while at Kansas compared to Markieff, but the elder brother is a better fit for Phoenix.

Markieff is suited for the four spot where as his brother is a tweener between the two forward positions. Phoenix certainly didn’t need another possible small forward with the logjam that they already have at the position on the current roster.

In a move that hasn’t been very common in the last seven or eight years, the Suns finally kept onto a draft pick and chose Markieff Morris out of Kansas with the 13th overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft. His twin brother, Marcus, was drafted a pick later by Houston. (more…)
