Introducing Gani Lawal

Posted by Greg Williams
August 30, 2010

On August 3rd the Phoenix Suns inked draftee Gani Lawal to a three year contract. Lawal was picked 46th in the second round of the NBA draft by the Suns. Lawal got an extra gift from the Suns in the form of guaranteed money. Lawal’s first year salary is guaranteed while the next two years are partially guaranteed. Doing this will make Lawal a restricted free agent when the three years are up. The Suns will have adequate time to assess his talents and decide if he is a keeper without other teams breathing down their necks. (more…)

LeBron James has come under fire from media and fans alike for the way he made his free agency choice public. An hour long TV special, even under the guise of making a charitable donation to the Boys and Girls Club, was ill-advised. Every handler on James’ payroll should be fired. Not only was ‘The Decision’ a complete train wreck, LeBron chose the wrong team. LeBron James should have come to Phoenix.

That’s right I said it. Steve Nash is the best point guard in the NBA. I can hear the collective groans of disapproval from here but put the Haterade down for a minute while I tell you why. Hopefully at the end of this dissertation you will join me at the altar of Nash greatness.

While Steve Nash is usually one of the smallest men on the court he plays bigger than anyone on the floor. Even now at 36 Steve Nash is a perpetual offense machine. All you have to do is look at the numbers. (more…)

As the football season gets ready to play the games that count, another season is about to get underway. The fantasy basketball drafts are set to start very soon. The NBA regular season starts only a month after football season. With that in mind here is a primer for you fantasy all-stars and newcomers as well. This is your definitive guide to who you should be drafting from the Phoenix Suns roster. Take good notes (or even better, bookmark this page) and get ready to own your league!

With Amare Stoudemire gone, there are no Suns on the roster worth taking in the first round. The highest rated Suns on the board is most likely to go in the second round, Steve Nash. However, opinion of Nash has declined every year and it is possible he could be had in the third round or maybe even the fourth if you’re in a league with a lot of newbies. Fact of the matter is Steve Nash is the best point guard in basketball. In fantasy circles however, (more…)

Lopez declines USA Basketball invite

May 29, 2010 - Phoenix, ARIZONA, UNITED STATES - epa02179498 Los Angeles Lakers players Sasha Vujacic (L) from Slovenia, Lamar Odom (CL) and Jordan Farmar (R) try to stop shot against Phoenix Suns player Robin Lopez (CR) during the first half of game six of the NBA Western Conference basketball finals at the US Airways Center in Phoenix, Arizona, USA 29 May 2010. The western conference champions will face the eastern conference champions in the NBA finals.

Phoenix Suns center Robin Lopez recently declined an invitation to play on the USA Basketball team. Lopez is the latest in a long line of NBA stars to decline the opportunity. A debilitating back injury has kept Lopez on the sidelines since before the NBA playoffs began.

The Suns hoped if they made it deep enough into the playoffs Lopez would be able to provide some minutes and his valuable seven foot body. Unfortunately, that was not the case as the Suns went up against the imposing Laker frontcourt of Andrew Bynum, Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol without Lopez.

Though it is the ultimate honor to be asked to play for your country, Lopez is definitely making the right decision. Lopez is in his NBA infancy, just completing his second season on the job. There will be more opportunities down the road. Lopez’s first allegiance should be to himself, then his team as that is what will provide him and his family with personal and financial security. Getting his back healed is Lopez’s first priority and nothing else comes before that, which is the way it should be.

Twin brother Brook is getting the most press in the family but Robin made giant leaps this season. Once Suns coach Alvin Gentry started installing Lopez into the starting lineup, the entire team got better. Amare was not burdened with having to score and do all the work on the defensive end and he scored more. Nash could take more shots knowing there was one person under the basket to bring down a miss. Lopez was there solely to play defense and he did it well. Lopez blocked shots, rebounded and played solid defense on the opposing team center. Lopez finally has a role in the offense and he will only get better. In another few years, Lopez will be a starter on the Olympic team.
